The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is cautioning employers that official requests to review employment eligibility verification (form I-9) records are never sent by eMail. The USCIS reports that criminals are using a fraudulent eMail address – news@uscis.gov – to demand I-9 records from employers. Employers should not respond to these eMails or click on any links contained in them.
What to do if You Receive a Scam eMail
If an employer receives an eMail requesting form I-9 records, the eMail should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. The employer may also forward the eMail to the “USCIS Webmaster” <uscis.webmaster@uscis.dhs.gov>.

As technology evolves and improves, scams perpetrated against employers, foreign nationals, and others are becoming more sophisticated and harder to detect. Stakeholders should be skeptical of demands made by those purporting to be government representatives, especially if a demand is made by phone or eMail.
